I'm stopping posting on Twitter (X) for economic reasons
20/5/2026
I'll get straight to the point. A few weeks ago, Twitter introduced a series of changes to its API that would force all accounts using it to pay. The level of extortion has reached such an extreme that they now charge 20 cents per link in a tweet. Until now, I had been exempt, but as of yesterday, I'm forced to pay to tweet. To the cost of putting a link in each tweet we must also add the cost of posting itself (which they also charge me for posting now):
It might seem like a negligible amount per tweet, but when you do the math, I end up paying around €50-70 a year to post on a social network. All the money I earn from the website goes directly to the server, and to this day I still haven't covered the cost of the next server renewal. I want to make it clear that I don't mind paying upfront to cover the server, but I will never, ever use my own money to post on a billionaire's social network. If someday in the future the website generates enough money to maintain the server, I will certainly consider getting back on Twitter, but we'll have to wait.
